EXECUTIVE EDITOR - LIFESTYLE

Primary Responsibility: Oversee the editorial development of a list of titles based on major pop culture brands across many major entertainment licenses. Reporting to the Publishing Director, this person would be responsible for meeting the timelines and budgets established for each title while maximizing all opportunities with existing and new partners. Additionally, this person would supervise existing editorial staff within the Lifestyle team.


What We Are Looking For: Insight Editions is searching for an experienced and collaborative book editor with extensive experience in cookbook and lifestyle publishing. At Insight Editions, we are enthusiastic about the brands we represent and committed to creating content that connects fans and readers with the most fun and innovative film

and pop culture books in the country. In this position you will manage high-profile projects with superior editorial standards and production values throughout the entire editorial process. Additionally, you will assist in acquiring books across multiple formats including cookbooks, entertaining books, and craft books. This role will publish across all the major entertainment brands, including Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Marvel, amongst many others. Experience working with licensed or pop culture content is a plus.


Detailed Responsibilities include but are not limited to: This is role requires you to manage multiple deadlines, expectations, and projects while working closely with film studios, agents/artists, and writers to deliver innovative, timely, and commercial projects to market. To be successful, you must possess a love for film and pop-culture. You

must be extremely detail-focused and can manage ever-changing deadlines and expectations with calm and ease. You will be identifying authors, negotiating work-for hire contracts, attending and sometimes hosting meetings with studios and licensors. You will be one establishing the creative vision behind each project and that sharing that vision with the author, designer, sales, and marketing. Being enthusiastic about

cooking and entertaining and having extensive contact with agents and authors is necessary.  


Key Responsibilities:

  • Acquire and edit 8-10 projects per year, depending on the extent.
  • Write sales, marketing, and cover copy.
  • Works with Group Publisher and Publishing Director in the acquisition and development of the Insight Lifestyle pub list to hit yearly growth targets, pub calendar milestones, and strategic goals.
  • Supervise Lifestyle editorial staff; maintains quality control standards for Lifestyle titles.
  • Assigns titles to editorial staff; hires freelance staff as needed (or delegates this responsibility).
  • Ensures the timely delivery of the Lifestyle pub list. Sets achievable pub dates; responds quickly to schedule issues; and drives team to meet established dates where possible.
  • Oversees the timely delivery of final covers per sales deadlines.
  • Ensures the timely delivery of quality sales materials for the Insight Lifestyle list.
  • Provides support to editorial team in navigating both internal and external hurdles, escalating to Group Publisher and Publishing Director if necessary.
  • Meets with divisional Art Director to review design, covers, etc., for the Lifestyle list
  • Work with Art Director to help calendar cookbook photoshoots for each season; develops and maintains list of photoshoot best practices. 


Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of cookbook publishing experience
  • Exceptional editorial skills
  • Deep agency and industry contacts a plus
  • Knowledge of and passion for pop culture
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, manage resources across multiple projects.
  • Initiative-taking, productive, meticulous, with strong organizational skills
  • Experience in mentoring and developing editorial talent, prioritizing work and resources, and providing timely and clear critical feedback.
  • Extensive knowledge of book manufacturing
  • Effective presentation skills and communication in both internal and external situations, including corporate leadership, brand partners, internal departments, and in high-pressure situations
  • Advanced or Expert proficiency with Adobe Acrobat Professional, MS Office Suite, Google Suite. Filemaker preferred, but not required.

SENIOR EDITOR - LIFESTYLE

Insight Editions is searching for an experienced, enthusiastic, and collaborative SENIOR EDITOR to join an editorial team that is passionate about the licensing brands we publish and committed to creating content that connects fans and readers with the most fun and innovative pop culture books in the country. In this position, you will be leading editors and assistant editors in creating gift, entertainment, and lifestyle books for some of the most exciting global brands including Harry Potter, Star Wars, Disney, Minecraft, Pokémon, Marvel, and more. The ideal candidate strives to be first to market with innovative formats, packages and licensed content that delights and inspires fans and readers everywhere.


You will work collaboratively with editorial, design and production staff to get high quality manuscripts delivered on time and on budget. The Senior Editor will directly supervise editors and editorial assistants and will oversee, and as assigned, directly edit select projects with high standards and uncompromised quality throughout the entire editorial process. This person is responsible for researching, hiring, and managing the best talent available for each project and developing concepts, formats and content as needed to meet the Insight Editions standards for market-leading innovative and uncompromised quality of design-led books. Through outstanding organization, oversight and keen management skill, this leader keeps all projects moving smoothly through the editorial pipeline up to prepress, ensuring products publish on plan, on spec and with the highest editorial standards applied to every project. This person works with the Editorial Director to produce products that foster closer working relationships with existing licensors by creating innovative product lines that resonate with fans and readers across multiple markets. It is imperative that you love research, are extremely detail-focused, and can handle ever-changing deadlines and expectations with calm and ease. Experience selecting authors, acquiring assets, and assisting in the creative vision behind a book is a plus. Being passionate about the product and concept and relentless in your drive for perfection are qualities that drive success in this position. Lastly, having an eye for what might be the next trending topic in the market and being networked in the industry are both advantages for any candidate. 


Detailed Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Accountable for organizing workflows and team assignments to make sure we are hitting annual net sales and gross margin targets
  • Fostering a culture of innovation, by executing publishing plans for unique, commercial and highly engaging books and gifts that are delivered on-time and on budget
  • Monitor team and individual goals, organize onboarding and training plans, and provide staff development and new learning opportunities so we can retain and promote the best and brightest creative talent
  • Creating a positive, supportive and collaborative working environment that fosters innovation, accountability and cross-functional team building
  • Working closely with editorial, production editorial, design teams and all creative services teams to ensure manuscripts are delivered as early as possible so we can maximize opportunities to build preorders and supply necessary materials for long lead media and sales and marketing schedules
  • Participate in marketing, publicity and promotion planning to support material needs that are required to create consumer awareness with the fan base, increase net sales and create brand awareness to drive traffic to retail both online and through brick and mortar
  • Acquire and edit several projects per year while leading, managing, and problem-solving active projects assigned to teams
  • Research industry trends and develop new book concepts and formats


Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5-8 years of recent experience acquiring and editing licensed and entertainment books is essential.

LICENSING AND CONTRACTS ADMINISTRATOR

Insight Editions is searching for an experienced, enthusiastic, and collaborative Licensing and Contracts Administrator to join a publishing team that is passionate about the brands we represent and committed to creating content that connects readers with the fun and innovative books. In this position, you will assist the licensing team in various ways, including the administration of the contracts process. In this role, you will work closely with multiple in-house teams to successfully keep both licensing and contracts discussions moving efficiently and accurately. Experience with licensed publishing is a plus. 


Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepares agreements using existing boilerplates
  • Makes adjustments to agreements as needed and under the supervision of the licensing team
  • Negotiates basic business terms with licensors, authors, and agents under the direction of the licensing team
  • Oversee the in-house team that manages contract filing, ensuring that all agreements are files correctly and quickly by said teams
  • Communicate key contract points with internal departments quickly and accurately
  • Makes recommendations for improving the contractual process as necessary
  • Manages the overall contract process, following up regularly with all parties to ensure timely completion of agreements
  • Assists the licensing team in prepare proposals, scheduling meetings, etc. 


Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a legal or contracts administrative role, legal support role, or general administrative support position
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Exceptionally organized, with a keen eye for details
  • Highly proficient with standard computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite, and quick learner with respect to computer programs and software. Familiarity with digital contract signature programs (Adobe Sign, etc.) and Filemaker a plus.
  • Previous experience with Licensing contracts is a plus 


This is a full-time hybrid position located in the Bay Area.

EDITOR - WELDON OWEN

Weldon Owen creates visually splendid, mind-expanding books that nurture a wide range of passions. We illustrate great ideas, entertain, and inspire readers around the world in the categories of food & drink; body, mind, spirit; lifestyle; craft; photography; music; humor; inspiration; children's, and more.


Weldon Owen is looking for a talented Editor to help drive our children's and family publishing program. This position will develop and acquire books for ages 8-12 and oversee additional general trade publishing in formats such as journals, manuals, and book-plus. At least 3 years of recent experience acquiring and editing illustrated books is essential. You will be the visionary behind each project and responsible for keeping everyone involved, engaged, and on schedule. An ability to manage many moving parts on a variety of projects while working closely with authors and illustrators is required. Experience discovering new authors, acquiring assets, and assisting in the creative vision behind a book is a plus.

  

Key Responsibilities:

  •  Acquire and edit approximately 10-15 projects per year
  • Manage projects from start to finish from ideation to finished books
  • Research industry trends and develop new book concepts and formats
  • Write sales, marketing, and cover copy
  • Develop relationships with authors, freelancers, and agents
  • Liaise with sales and marketing, and oversee the development of marketing collateral
  • Create project budgets and manage schedules  


Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience developing and editing illustrated books.
  • A proven track record of acquiring, developing, and championing and successful children's publications
  • Experience managing multiple schedules and meeting deadlines
  • Experience managing budgets and P&Ls within the publishing environment
  • Ability to manage a team of freelancers and work collaboratively within the internal editorial and design teams
  • Knowledge of sales and marketing needs; an ability to liaise across departments and develop effective sales materials
  • Exceptional editorial and writing skills
  • Strong familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Experience working with licensors and routing approvals is a plus.
